CyberKnife® was originally used for tumours and neurosurgical treatments of the brain and spine but with improved software CyberKnife users have so far developed and continue to develop protocols for treating tumours in the lungs, liver, pancreas, kidney, and prostate.

One previous limitation in radiotherapy/radiosurgery has been that the tumour to be treated is constantly on the move as the patient breathes in and out.  The beneficial effect of radiation on the desired location must be balanced against the inevitable damage caused to surrounding healthy tissue.

The CyberKnife Society is an organization dedicated to bringing together diverse medical professionals affiliated with radiosurgery worldwide to foster scholarly exchange of clinical information, and to educate the general public with patient information on treating medical conditions such as cancers, lesions & tumours anywhere throughout the body using the CyberKnife, most of which are unreachable by other radiotherapy systems.

Treatments use the XSight® software package which enables CyberKnife to use the skull and spine to provide reference markers.  This means that brain tumours can be treated without an intrusive head frame and spinal tumours can be treated without the need to place metal fiducials around the tumour site.
Whilst CyberKnife cannot assist in all cases it does now enable some to be treated where radiosurgery would otherwise not be an option and new methodologies are being developed at key CyberKnife centres around the world.
The breakthrough with CyberKnife comes from the Synchrony® software.  This allows it to track and compensate for small body movements between doses and shifts the balance of costs and benefits strongly in the patient's favour.   
Different tumours and organs have different radiation absorption characteristics so special protocols have had to be developed for each area.
